The Mahjong Open Bloomington & Beyond
More people. More tables. More Mahjong.
The Mahjong Open is one big, flexible Mahj circle designed to help you play more often, meet new people and expand beyond your regular table.
There is no set league night and no weekly location. You choose matches that work with your schedule, play as often as you would like and decide how competitive you want to be.
Holiday Season
October 26–December 20, 2026
$80 for the full eight-week season
Registration opens September 15
How does The Mahjong Open work?
After you register, you will have access to The Mahjong Open portal, where players can propose matches and claim available seats.
See a match that works for you? Grab a seat!
Do not see one that fits your schedule or location? Add your own! Matches can be hosted at someone’s home or at a local brewery, café or other gathering spot.
You can play once a week. You can play three times a week. You can skip a busy week and catch up later. You do not have to commit to the same night, the same place or the same group of people.
That flexibility is what makes The Open so much fun.
Bloomington + Beyond
Play across Bloomington, Ellettsville, Bedford, Martinsville, Bargersville, Spencer, Nashville and surrounding communities.
Most of our current matches are based in Bloomington and Ellettsville, but that is the beauty of The Open: anyone can propose a match!
Add a table close to you, invite other registered players to join and help us grow the Mahj circle throughout the area.
What is included?
Your registration includes:
Eight weeks of flexible play
Access to all open matches in our playing area
The ability to propose and host matches
Score tracking and live standings
Opportunities to compete for prizes
Special challenges and local Mahjong Open events
Lots of chances to meet new people and play more Mahjong
Do I need to be an advanced player?
Absolutely not.
You should know the basics and be able to play independently, but you do not need to be fast, fearless or perfect.
Beginners, intermediate players and advanced players are all welcome. Questions happen. Missed Mahjongs happen. Occasionally an entire table forgets whose turn it is. We carry on. 😂
Please note that The Mahjong Open is not a lesson or beginner class. If you are brand new to American Mahjong, start with one of our Mahj in Bloom beginner series, then join us for a future season!
Do I have to be competitive?
Nope!
We submit scores, follow a leaderboard and compete for prizes, but most players simply want more people to play with and more reasons to get out of the house.
Some people love watching the standings. Some are determined to win a prize. Others are thrilled to find an open seat on a random Wednesday night.
You decide what you want your Open experience to be.
Do I need a partner or a full table?
No. That is the whole point!
You do not need to bring a partner, organize four people or coordinate everyone’s calendars. Simply claim an open seat through the portal and show up ready to play.
Do I have to host?
No. You are welcome to join matches throughout the season without hosting your own.
But if you have a table, a favorite local spot or a time that works well for you, we would love for you to propose a match. Every new host gives everyone more ways to play!
Ready to join the circle?
More tables. More people to play with. More chances to say “Mahjong!”
That’s The Mahjong Open Bloomington + Beyond. 🩷
